Learn selection basics
A selection separates part of an image so that you can work on that area without affecting the rest of the image.
(1). In the instrument panel, select the rectangular marquee tool. Drag a rectangular selection over the image. The area inside the animated border represents your selection.
(2). To make more selections, click the Add to select icon in the options bar or press and drag Shift. To make a short selection, click the subtraction from the selection icon in the options bar, or press and drag Alt (Windows) or Options (macOS).
(3). Choose a layer you want to adjust. Then try to apply some adjustments (Image> Adjustments). With an active selection, the adjustment affects only the selected area of that layer. This is true if you make a filter, paint, fill, copy, or other edits.
(4). When you have done this, select> Cancel, or select by pressing Control + D (Windows) or Command + D (macOS).
